If you’re planning a wedding, I’m sure you’ve seen some seriously dreamy detail photos pop up on your FYP (for you page). Probably from a well-followed photographer who is out of most peoples’ price range. Unattainable right? WRONG! Getting those money shots are totally within your reach…you just have to know what to do, what to buy, and what to say to your photographer BEFORE your big day.

Side note - the detail photos embedded in this post were made possible by one of my amazing brides, Lexi, who put everything I’m about to tell you into action. Be a Lexi!!

What to do…
Book your perfect venue: This may seem obvious, and maybe you wouldn't even think it's a big deal when it comes to detail photos, but it's actually a game-changer! Your venue sets the tone for your entire day. I can’t stress that enough. That being said, choose the venue that best coincides with your vision/theme. If you do that, there will be plenty of on-theme backdrops + props available for your photographer to use, keeping the detail images consistent with the rest of your day.

Save + send your inspo: Before you even hire a photographer, pin away, girlfriend!! Find your inspiration from Pinterest, Instagram, or anywhere else and SAVE. THAT. SHIT. If you already have a photographer, send them your inspo! As photographers, we love receiving visual examples of the ideas you have for your big day. It helps us immensely to cater our services to your specific wants + needs.

What to buy…
Anything that speaks to you + your vibe. Keep your vision in mind when purchasing ALL of your wedding accessories.

Going for an upscale/luxury vibe? Here are some ideas…
  • Pearl accents (shoes, veil, etc.)
  • Neutral, elegant invitations with multiple pieces (main invite, RSVP card, etc.)
  • A classy/designer bottle of perfume
  • Additional loose flowers from your florist

If you’re having a backyard/casual wedding, consider purchasing items like…
  • Cute + playful programs for your guests to read before the ceremony
  • Unique flats/sneakers to wear under your dress as a cute peak-a-boo
  • Biodegradable confetti for your send-off (your photographer will love this for detail shots)

Listing my ideas for every type of wedding would make for a very long blog post, but these examples at least give you a baseline. Bottom line: get creative + stay on theme! Oh, and support small businesses :)

What you already have…
You may have the perfect detail items sitting in an old jewelry box or in a drawer somewhere at your parents’ house. Sweet additions to your photos could include:
  • Your mom/grandmother’s engagement ring
  • Your something new, borrowed, and blue
  • A printed photo from when you + your partner first started dating
  • Notes you’ve written to each other throughout your relationship
  • A book/vinyl album you both love

These are just to name a few! My wedding clients receive a very thorough list of detail item ideas from me. AKA, if you want more, hire me (shameless plug)!! ;)

Communicate with your photographer…
Assuming you hired a professional photographer, that person is an expert in what they do. They spend countless hours perfecting + researching their trade. So, use their expertise! Ask them what they think of items you’re thinking of purchasing. I can almost guarantee they’ll be happy to chat with you about it…we get excited about weird stuff like that. Thank me later for the following tips!!

PRO TIP 1: Ask them about items they might already carry with them to weddings to enhance flat-lays and detail photos. Myself and many wedding photographers purchase fabrics, delicate ribbon, styling mats, and ring dishes/trays to add texture + dimension to their images.

PRO TIP 2: Want them to absolutely worship you?! As your big day approaches, begin collecting your detail items into one vessel - a box, a tote bag, a literal plastic bag from Walmart…we don’t care! Doing this in advance will mean you have one less thing to think about the morning of your wedding + will tremendously help your photographer. This is so helpful to me that my thank-you gift to new brides is a cute little tote for their detail items.

Wrap-up...
Morale of the story - the quality of your detail photos is largely within your control. Depending on your personality type, this is either a relief or a burden to you (LOL). If it feels like a burden, you don’t have to do any of it alone! Your wedding vendors are there to make recommendations, give advice, and help make your day what you want it to be. Stay strong, bride, and remember that the most important opinion when it comes to your wedding is yours!
